Graduate Student Definitions and Enrollment Requirements

Things to Know:

Graduate students should be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to be eligible for Fellowships and Assistantships. Full-time status for most graduate students is 8 credit hours. Fellowship disbursements for students who are enrolled in fewer than 4 hours during any semester must be reviewed by the financial aid office and possibly approved by the Office of the VP and Chief Financial Officer.

Exceptions include:

1. Approved thesis or dissertation courses. A list of approved IUB thesis/dissertation courses is available on the OSFA Scholarship Processing Intranet (https://www.sharepoint.iu.edu/sites/bosfa/scholarships/default.aspx).
2. There are some approved placeholder courses that count as full-time enrollment. A list of enrollment/certification exceptions is also available on the OSFA Scholarship Processing Intranet (https://www.sharepoint.iu.edu/sites/bosfa/scholarships/default.aspx).
3. Summer fellowships generally require only 4 credit hours* of enrollment.

*In some special instances, summer fellowships can be disbursed to students who are not enrolled. Contact the financial aid office for more details.
