Swimming Energy Expenditure

The ability to quantify energy expenditure and work load during swimming has long been an interest to recreational and competitive swimmers alike.  Doc Counsilman once asked in 1968, “how do I know how far or how intense or at what velocities my swimmer should actually be training at” and “how do we quantify training load?”  Today, sport scientists, coaches, competitive swimmers, and recreational enthusiast continue to pursue answers to these questions.  Our research has focused on using accelerometer-based activity monitors as a means of estimating swimming energy expenditure, and quantifying metrics of competitive swim training.
