Since 1982, forecasting the economies of the nation and Indiana (and more recently its metros) has been the primary focus of the Center for Econometric Model Research (CEMR). It is research with a purpose, with forecasting results provided in summary form to the general public and in their full and detailed glory to subscribers. Over the years, dozens of business and government agencies have relied on CEMR's short- and long-term forecasts and projections to enable them to make knowledge-based decisions. Subscribers meet with Center faculty and staff quarterly and rely on their expertise to assist with their own internal business forecasting.
A joint effort of the Kelley School of Business and the Economics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences in Bloomington, the Center has trained numerous doctoral students over the years while they engage in the study and use of statistical models for real-world forecasting and academic research. The Center is not only a unique partnership within Indiana University, but is a unique synthesis of the theoretical and applied worlds of research—bringing academic excellence to the real world of work.
CEMR’s forecasts also form the basis of the annual Kelley School of Business Outlook tour, where faculty share their insights on the economy with communities throughout the state. The Center’s work is also used for the annual Outlook edition of the Indiana Business Review.
The Center was first established by Jeff Green and Morton Marcus. Today, it is led by co-directors James C. Smith and Willard E. Witte. For more information, please contact Jim Smith.
