IU School of Medicine Centennial Celebration
September 23, 2003 -- Noon-1:00pm

Transcript of Remarks

Hope you could attend the kick-off party for the IU School of Medicine centennial year. If you couldn't be there, or if you'd like to see a repeat, view an archived video stream. RealPlayer required. (Download RealPlayer here.)

All nine medical center campuses joined together via large-screen video to celebrate our 100th birthday. Dean Brater and Center directors spoke, everyone sang Happy Birthday, and we blew out candles on Indiana-shaped birthday cakes. All in attendance received Centennial lapel pins as gifts. Student groups took orders for commemorative sportswear.

Dean Brater's Remarks

Dean Brater... ... and regional center directors communicated via a polycom system.

The Birthday Cake

Beginning assembly of the cake. The cake has both chocolate and vanilla sections -- it is sure to be a hit!
The Indiana-shaped birthday cake sports nine red stars, marking the locations of the nine centers for medical education.
Napkins were embossed with the date and centennial logo in gold.

Blowing Out the Candle

Dean Craig Brater, M.D. (right) and Indiana University President Adam Herbert light the centennial candle on the IU School of Medicine birthday cake, while Jose Espada, director of financial aid, leads us in singing Happy Birthday. In a symbolic gesture, President Herbert lights the candle on the centennial birthday cake. Dean Brater blows out the centennial candle on the IU School of Medicine birthday cake.
Dean Brater blows out the centennial candle as Indiana University President Adam Herbert (left) watches. The candle was lit by President Herbert. The candle is blown out, and a handshake seals the deal. Dean Brater cuts the cake.
Dean Brater serves the first piece of cake to President Herbert. Guests line up to sample the cake. The cake is taken apart faster than it was assembled!

Special Guests in Attendance

Dean Brater holds up a polo shirt embroidered with the centennial logo -- one of many items sold to raise funds for student groups.

Scenes From the Crowd

Party guests congregate around the skeleton of the uncompleted DNA Tower glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly. The crowd filled the entire Mills Atrium in the VanNuys Medical Sciences Building.
