IU Bloomington CommencementNew Commencement Website to Go Live by March 15 Numerous school recognition ceremonies and receptions are held during Commencement Week. The 2008 schedule will be posted by March 15. This year's schedule will be very simlar to last year's. To see that one, go here: Schedule of Activities (PDF). Commencement 2008: Just the Facts The Ceremony The CeremonyCommencement will be held at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Assembly Hall. The ceremony lasts about 90 minutes and includes conferral of all degrees, a keynote speaker, hooding of Ph.D. and doctoral candidates, and induction into the Alumni Association. TicketsGraduates may invite as many guests as they would like to the Commencement ceremony.
Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Assembly Hall opens at 8 a.m. for the morning ceremony and 1 p.m. for the afternoon ceremony. ParkingFree parking is available in the parking lot surrounding Assembly Hall. Traffic in Bloomington is congested on Commencement Day, so be sure to allow ample driving time. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before the ceremony begins. Special AssistanceClosed captioning and sign language interpreters will be provided. Elevator access and special seating is available, but space is limited, especially in the wheelchair sections where only one member of a party will be able to sit with the wheelchair guest. All others will be seated with the general audience. Please call (812) 855-4664 to make arrangements. PhotographsYou may take photographs at any point during the ceremony. The IU Alumni Association hires a photographer to take photos of the graduates in their caps and gowns. Graduates do not need to sign up for these photographs before the ceremony. Cards will be distributed to all graduates directly preceding the ceremony, and the photographer will take their picture as they walk down the hall into the stadium. Proofs and order forms will be mailed to your permanent address after graduation. There is no official video of the Commencement ceremony. Honor CordsStudents with outstanding academic records who will receive their degrees with honors are entitled to wear cream and crimson cords during the commencement ceremony. The requirements for graduating with honors are different for each school. Honors are awarded by a vote of various faculties, and cords are provided by the University. Highest Distinction: Cream and crimson cords Indiana University has also granted approval for graduates who are members of nearly 60 honor societies to wear honors cords or medallions during Commencement. The majority are nationally recognized honors societies whose members have demonstrated academic excellence in their fields. See: Honor Cords and Medallions DiplomasYou will not receive your diploma at the Commencement ceremony. Diplomas will be mailed to your permanent address two to three months after graduation.
