Indiana University established the Center for Education and Society in 1999 to facilitate social-science-based research on education that speaks to important matters of educational policy and practice. The Center for Education and Society is committed to the belief that the most vexing puzzles about education today – ranging from the perceived crisis of excellence in the U.S. to the stubborn persistence of educational inequality around the world – can best be understood from a perspective that integrates the worlds of the social sciences and the research community of scholars in schools of education.

The Center has two main foci: (1) to build a strong inter-unit community of researchers in which faculty and graduate students in the social sciences with interests in education and faculty and graduate students in the School of Education who look at education from a social science perspective regularly interact, as well as to support new research that bridges the traditional divides between the social sciences and professional schools of education; and (2) to provide to a group of graduate students in education and in the social sciences rigorous cross-field training and research experiences alongside their thorough grounding in their home unit.
