This lecture course will explore the main characters of Finnish phonology and morphology. Main emphasis is given to phenomena that is unfamiliar to a speaker of an Indo-European language, such as loss of articles, gender and the future tense as well as the loss of the verb ‘to have’. We will study the form, meaning and use of the 15 different cases. We will also discuss briefly the history and development of these cases. Also some recent grammaticalization studies of Finnish linguists will be briefly presented and discussed.
This course is especially designed for linguistics majors or students of other languages who are interested in morphologically rich languages and who have acquired the basic terminology related to the study of grammar. The aim of the course is to learn to understand the structure of Finnish language so that the students are able to read transcriptions of Finnish example sentences and also analyze and transcribe themselves simple examples.
