Introductory Hungarian II

The introductory-level Hungarian course is designed to enable students to converse about simple personal and social topics, and read and write short texts. This one-year course intends to cover all the basic sentence patterns in present tense and to introduce a wide range of everyday topics. The goal is to make students familiar with the fundamental structure of the Hungarian language as well as to enable them to use the material covered in class with an appropriate level of comfort and confidence. The material also provides general information about Hungarian lifestyle, society, and culture.

In the second semester, the daily classes focus on the following: listening to and conducting conversations, intonation exercises, grammar exercises and writing simple dialogues and essays. Topics include: traveling, work, housing, shopping, the post office and bank, and family. In order to provide a guideline for further study, possessive structures and sentences, in addition to indefinite and definite verb conjugations, are emphasized.

In addition to the material covered by the course book, related sources, other textbooks, and authentic Hungarian texts will provide extra material to the course.

Requirements: regular class attendance and active participation; daily homework; weekly quizzes; a midterm and final exam.
