- Introductory Persian I

Course Objectives
This class offers an introduction to basic communication skills in Modern Standard Persian. Its general goal is to familiarize you with the sounds, alphabet, and basic grammar of the language. You will learn to read, write, speak, and comprehend simple to moderately complex sentences. Through readings, class conversations, listening to Persian language media programs, film viewing, and cultural activities, you will also develop an awareness of the Iranian culture.
We will aim to cover all the chapters in Moghaddam’s textbook during the semester. In addition to this book, we will use many outside authentic materials, which present topics pertaining to daily life and everyday culture in Iran. Each chapter should take approximately three sessions to complete.
The Cultural Components and Technologically Driven Sources for the Class: Every day ten to fifteen minutes of the class time will be devoted to many aspects of the Iranian culture. Your instructor hopes to expose you to numerous authentic/original materials through the Internet and other media
Suggested Texts and Materials
Aryanpour Kashani, Abbas and Manoochehr. The Combined New Persian- English and English- Persian Dictionary. 1986.
Assignments and requirements:
- Students will have daily homework. Attendance and participation in class and lab is required.
- Once a week students need to listen to Persian speaking radio or TV programs.
- Weekly tests and quizzes
- Midterm exam
- Final exam
- Attendance of cultural events, 3-4 movies, tea hours, and special events.
Absences
Language learning requires greater participation in the classroom than most other subjects in the university curriculum. Students are expected to attend ALL classes. Students are allowed to miss three instructional hours during the course of one semester without grade penalty. Absences beyond three instructional hours will result in grade penalty of 2% per day. Additional absences can be considered by the department only with proper documentation of attested medical needs for which a doctor's note will be required, and with the possibility of a tutoring requirement to preclude class disruption for other students.
Departmental Policies
- Auditing: The Department of Central Eurasian Studies does not allow auditing of language courses. Any inquiries must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.
- Enrollment: Students enrolled in CEUS language courses obtain a grade at the end of each semester. The Department does not offer pass/fail options.
- Incompletes are not given in CEUS language courses. Any inquiries must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.
- If you are a native speaker of a language or you are a citizen of a country where the language is commonly spoken, or you graduated from a high school in that country, Indiana University and departmental policy may (or may not) prohibit you from enrollment in this language class.
