Intermediate Hungarian I

Course Objectives

The intermediate-level Hungarian course is designed to enable students to speak and converse more fluently about personal and simple academic topics, to express themselves and articulate their opinion, to read and understand short literary and scholarly texts, and to write to fulfill basic personal, business, and academic needs. This one-year course intends to cover all the substantial forms and to introduce a wide range of new topics. The goal is a further improvement of language skills as well as to enable students to review and use their basic knowledge of Hungarian and the new material covered in class freely and creatively. Students will also learn more about the life style and social-historical facts of Hungary through texts and videos and be encouraged to meet more and more authentic texts.

In the first semester, topics will include: traveling and being abroad, expressing temporal relations, writing a cv, being sick and visiting a doctor. The classes will also focus on the forms of past tense, temporal relations and imperative speech-acts.

Assignments and evaluation

Grades are based on class attendance, participation and assignments. Assignments include: presentations in class, oral and written homework, weekly journals, quizzes, tests, midterm and final exam. No bonuses or extra credit may be given for extracurricular events.
Grading based on:
- Active participation in class (25%)
- Homework, presentations, Portfolio, Daily journal (25%)
- Quizzes, tests (25%)
- Final test (25%)


Language learning requires greater participation in the classroom than most other subjects in the university curriculum. Students are expected to attend ALL classes. Students are allowed to miss three instructional hours during the course of one semester without grade penalty. Absences beyond three instructional hours will result in grade penalty of 2% per day. Additional absences can be considered by the department only with proper documentation of attested medical needs for which a doctor's note will be required, and with the possibility of a tutoring requirement to preclude class disruption for other students.

Departmental Policies

  • Auditing: The Department of Central Eurasian Studies does not allow auditing of language courses. Any inquiries must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.
  • Enrollment: Students enrolled in CEUS language courses obtain a grade at the end of each semester. The Department does not offer pass/fail options.
  • Incompletes are not given in CEUS language courses. Any inquiries must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.
  • If you are a native speaker of a language or you are a citizen of a country where the language is commonly spoken, or you graduated from a high school in that country, Indiana University and departmental policy may (or may not) prohibit you from enrollment in this language class.
