Advanced Hungarian I

Course Objectives

The advanced-level Hungarian course offers advanced level language study for students who have completed four semesters (or more) of Hungarian, and have a substantial basic knowledge of Hungarian grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. The purpose of this course is to enable students to converse about moderately complex personal, social, and academic topics, read and understand a full range of literary genres, and write and translate to meet most personal and academic needs.

- weekly journal (min. 10 sentences per day)
- 15 minute oral presentation (twice per semester)
- 2 page essay on chosen topic
- reading of Hungarian short stories, with reading journal
- Portfolio by the end of the semester

Grading based on:

- Acive participation in class (30%)
- Homework, presentations, Portfolio (30%)
- Quizzes, tests (15%)
- Final test (25%)


Language learning requires greater participation in the classroom than most other subjects in the university curriculum. Students are expected to attend ALL classes. Students are allowed to miss three instructional hours during the course of one semester without grade penalty. Absences beyond three instructional hours will result in grade penalty of 2% per day. Additional absences can be considered by the department only with proper documentation of attested medical needs for which a doctor's note will be required, and with the possibility of a tutoring requirement to preclude class disruption for other students.
