- In this course, we will focus on the wide variety of langauge styles and registers in use in modern written and spoken Persian. To assure fluency and accurate comprehension, we will review some fundamental grammatical structure, paying particular attention to the subtleties of their uses and meanings in various contexts. We will work on mastering Persina's vast vocabulary by studying verbal roots and patterns of word formation. Our readings will also help develop your recognition and comprehension of phrasal verbs, idiomatic constructions, proverbial expressions, and complex grammatical structures. These readings will compromise a wide range of material from journalistic and expository prose to narrative fiction and poetry. As the semester proceeds, I will try to tailor these readings to fit the interests of the students. Tranlsation exercises, quizzes, short compositions, spoken drills, and dictations will help you develop a command of all aspects of the langauge and prepare you for midterm and final exams.
In the course of your study of Persian here at Indiana, you have collected a considerable array of instructional material. You ought to have copies of the following texts from last year (if you do not, please order and purchase them now):

However, most of the readings and other material for the class will be found at the library e-reserve site for this course.
Expectations and Evaluation:
I will evaluate your work and compute your grade based on the following three criteria.
Class attendance and participation: You are expected to attend every class meeting prepared and alert. We will also screen three Iranian films each semester that will be shown in the evenings. You are expected to attend all screening. Attendance and participation account for 20% of your grade for the semester.
Homework: With rare exceptions, you will have some sort of homework everyday. Hoemwork accounts for 40% of your grade.
Exams: There will be a midterm and final exams with in-class and take-hoome components. There will be one additional take-home exam-exercise. I will give short quizzes, oral exams, and dictations (about 15 minutes in length) about one every four class meeting. These exams will make up 40% of your grade.
