COURSE OBJECTIVES
Requires near-native fluency in Modern Turkish, and at least two semesters of Ottoman
“Advanced Ottoman Turkish I” is designed to train students of Turkish Language and Literature in deciphering and understanding advanced level Ottoman literary sources. These include but are not limited to poetry collections, biographies of poets, travel literature, and hagiographic manuscripts and other Ottoman sources of Islam. In addition to learning grammar and reading texts, students will also be introduced to major scholarly figures, theories, secondary, and especially primary sources.

ASSIGNMENTS
Attendance and Class Participation: 20% (This includes preparation of the reading materials and classroom presentations.)
Two short article summaries: 10% each
Short Assignments and Exercises: 10%
Final Exam: 30%
Final Project: 20%
