Introduction to Hungarian Studies

This course aims to offer a general introduction to Hungarian studies. At the outset the geographical location of Hungary and the size of Hungarian communities are considered. Particular emphasis is put on such characteristics as ethnicity, religion, language, and culture. A brief survey of the periods in the history of the Hungarian people (prehistory; Christianity: the influence of Rome and Byzantium; the Habsburg dynasty and the Ottoman Empire; Enlightenment, Nationalism, and Liberalism; the multi-ethnic Dual Monarchy; World War I and its consequences; World War II and the holocaust; Communism and Postcommunism) is followed by an analysis of the main achievements of Hungarian culture: science, humanities, sports, music, literature, and the visual arts.
