This course is designed to present some 15 outstanding Hungarian politicians and political thinkers of our century. Some of them represented conservatism and communism - the two main ideological and political streams in 20th century Hungary. Others advocated right radicalism, fascism or a sort of democracy. Special emphasis will be placed on the ideas of two liberal democrats: Oszkár Jászi and István Bibó. During the course we will analyze their opposing concepts on Hungarian history, nationalism and the nationality question, Trianon and revisionism, parlamentarism and dictatorship, the peasant, gentry and Jewish question, etc. Our work will be based on the original writings of these politicians and thinkers.
