U320/U520 Historical Portrait Gallery of 20th Century Hungary

The purpose of this course is to give a survey of 15 of those Hungarians whose life and deeds are of historical significance for Hungarian history in the 20th century. The series of portraits include not only politicans who played indiscutable part in the shaping of the nation`s destiny in times of war and peace, but as well as artists, writers, thinkers whose life and work expressed the twisting course of the 20th century`s Hungarian history. Through the analyzis of the different biographies we will explore the the complex relation between personality and historical process, between cultural trends and historical circumstances.

Grading:  There will be no examination.  Grades will be based on class performance. In addition graduates will be required to write a short essay on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor.
