The course is to give an introduction to modern standard or literary Buriat, a South Siberian language of the Mongolian family. The main features of its grammar, vocabulary and phonetics are to be shown in reading, translating and commenting on texts written in Cyrillic characters, first the 39 lessons and the specimens in the textbook of Dondukov and Pakhutova (Ulan-Ude, 1962), then selected literary and folklore texts (the latter partly in dialectal records). Special attention is paid to peculiarities of Buriat grammar (e.g. the personal suffixes of the finite verbs and verbal nouns, their negation) and lexicon (particular Buriat forms of Mongolian words, literary, archaic and dialectal elements, strata of Russian influence).
