The Secret History of the Mongols is the most important source on the life of Chinggis Qan, the first and greatest monument of Mongolian literature, and one of the outstanding masterpieces of Central Eurasian culture as a whole. In this seminar, we will cover: 1) the transmission of the work; 2) the scholarship on it; 3) its composition, authorship, and relation to other historical works of the Mongol empire; 4) a section by section reading of the text. Students will write a 20 page paper on a theme chosen in consultation with the instructor and these papers will be read and discussed in the second half of class.
