U523  Hungarian Readings
Mihaly Szegedy-Maszak

During the spring semester we will read the first part of an outstanding Hungarian novel: Márai Sándor Egy polgár vallomásai. The course will focus on reading but students will be required to write short, 1 to 3 page long summaries each week. During classes we will discuss the chapter assigned. Students will do occasional research on the work and life of Márai Sándor and on issues put forward in the book. Fluent knowledge of Hungarian is required. Permission of instructor is required.

Grading will be based on regular class attendance, reading and writing assignments. Two longer papers of 6-8 pages are expected to be written around midterm and before the end of the semester. These two longer papers will also add points to the grade.
