The advanced course serves to further consolidate the students’ knowledge of the structure of Estonian, and add on to the vocabulary, especially in the areas of interest/specialization of the student. While all the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing are further developed in this course, compared to the earlier years of Estonian language instruction at IU, it places a stronger emphasis on reading and writing.
Three hours of class meeting per week mean intensive independent work out of class, and a strong incentive from the students to contribute to both the overall structure of the class as well as the individual meetings. At this level, the course will be tailored to the needs of the students as much as possible. The students participate in selecting the texts for reading, and much of the explicit instruction of structures and usage is based on the students’ individual difficulties in the particular areas of the language.
Assignments: The assignments in this class include reading for general comprehension, close reading for translation, listening for general comprehension, listening for details, writing of summaries, reviews, letters, and essays, class discussions and oral presentations. Translation and structured grammar exercises will be assigned to practice particular structures.
Home-reading: The students will read on their own, with the help of the dictionary
Requirements: Attendance and active participation is absolutely necessary in this class, and so is independent work. There will be regular quizzes (every other week or after completion of a topic), a midterm and a final exam. The exams will consist of both in-class oral and written parts, and include a take-home component (an essay and/or translation
