Estonian Culture and Civilization

This course will explore the various facets of Estonian cultural development, including folklore and the oral tradition, religion, language and literature, the rise of literacy and education, various forms of high culture (music, art, theatre, film), and the rise of an Estonian press and the printed word in general. Although the course will concentrate on the Estonian case, some comparison will be made with neighboring and more distant European cultural traditions. There will be a number of media presentations to illustrate the developments in the areas noted above.

Written Assignments: (1) a 5-7 pp. essay using literary sources, (2) a 5-7 pp. bibliographical essay on some aspect of Estonian culture, and (3) a 15-20 pp. research paper.
