CEUS Advising Policy

CEUS ADVISING FORMS - FACULTY APPROVAL
Students pick up CEUS advising forms in GB157 before meeting with a tenured/tenure-track CEUS professor to discuss their degree progress and planned courses. Interaction with the student is required; faculty must not sign a blank form. All students, including those currently in SPEA, must meet with a CEUS advisor before registration. Faculty sign each page of the advising form and instruct the student to return the form to GB157 to obtain an electronic release in OneStart that will permit registration. If forms are returned to CEUS without classes being listed, the student will be sent back to the advisor for update and a second signature.

A completed and faculty-signed U600 Directed Readings form is required for U600 enrollment.

Signature of the CEUS Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) is required for research methods courses - after the faculty advisor has signed the advising form. By vote of the CEUS faculty, a methodology course is defined as a "how-to" rather than a "what-is" course. Two types of courses may fulfill this requirement. First is a course that introduces students to theories and conceptual tools of a discipline, for example, "Introduction to Historical Linguistics" or "Issues in Contemporary Historiography." Second is a course that covers the reference works and research methods in a region of study, such as "Chinese Sources for Tibetan Studies" or "Sources for the Study of Central Asian History." The methodology course may be taken outside or inside the department. The choice of methodology course must be approved by the student’s advisor in coordination with the Director of Graduate Studies.

The Schedule of Classes is listed in OneStart. An easy-to-read text version of the Schedule of Classes is accessible from IU Home Page www.iub.edu under Popular Campus Sites, but isn’t updated as often as the official version under OneStart.
