U320/U520  Transylvania:  Historical, Political, and Cultural Issues
Lynn Hooker

“Transylvania” – the land beyond the forest – has a rich, multi-ethnic history indicated by its multiple names: Erdély in Hungarian, Ardeal in Romanian, Siebenbürgen in German.  Who has told the story of this region, and how has it been told?  In this class we will address the history and historiography of this region from multiple points of view, as well as talking about cultural phenomena that have arisen around "Transylvanism" – in scholarship, literature, and in traditional culture, particularly music and dance.  This knowledge will serve as a basis for discussion of the continuing political debates over ethnic policies relating to Transylvania.

Days and Time:  Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30-3:45.
