Advanced Kazakh II

In spring semester in advanced Kazakh language course we will keep working on improvement of listening, speaking, writing skills. The primary goal of the course is to give as much information as possible about the most important parts of life in contemporary Kazakhstan and introduce the culture and mentality, so student’s knowledge can cover necessary vocabulary to have ability to communicate according to the situation, purpose and roles of the participants. The course includes improving translation skills into target language and vice versa as well.

Advanced level course extends the learner’s grammatical, lexical and functional skills, foundations for accurate and fluent communications established on previous levels using a wide variety of stimulating and challenging activities.

Listening activities involve listening to narratives, interviews from authentic sources such a radio and “Cenasianet” language programs. Learners are given opportunity for personal expressions in the form of pare work and discussions.

I am planning to use teaching materials from different sources. Students will be given hand outs and copies.  Advanced level students will work with fictional works of Kazakh literature, newspapers and radio programs as well.

In the advanced Kazakh Course we will be learning the following grammatical forms.

  1. Verb tenses (present, past forms (used to, perfect tense))
  2. Direct and report speech
  3. Adjectives made from verbs and their functions in sentences
  4. Verbs as nouns: accusative
  5. Compound verbs and their functions
  6. Conditionals: real conditionals and fantasy
  7. Idioms  

In addition, we will study the following topics and their related vocabulary:

  1. History of KZ: historical figures and events, locations
  2. Kazakh Literature: genres of folklore and contemporary literature
  3. Political system of KZ: parliament, parties and city administration
  4. Culture and traditions of KZ: holidays and customs
  5. Crime and Court system of KZ
  6. Future: planning and imagining

Class Policy

The final grade is determined by fulfilling the following requirements.

  1. Homework: accounts for 20% of the grade
    • Translations of work have to be submitted in typed form.
    • Handwritten assignments have to be neat and legible.
  2. Class, language lab attendance and participation: Accounts for 10% of your class grade
    • This class meets at 10:10 – 11:00 A.M. five times a week. Punctuality and daily attendance are mandatory.
  3. Weekly tests and quizzes: Quizzes and tests constitute 15% of your grade.
    Every week there will be some kind of test or quiz based on the new materials that we have covered in the classroom. 
  4. Examinations: 45%
    • Midterm exam is worth 20% of your grade
    • Final exam is worth 25%
    The dates will be announced in the classroom in advance.
  5. Oral and comprehension exam: The oral exams make up 15% of your grade.
