Hagiographic Manuscripts

This advanced seminar will provide graduate students of Turkish Studies with a historical survey of Turkish Islamic hagiography as a literary genre as well as close readings of major manuscripts. Among the topics of the seminar will be the birth and development of the saint cult in Islamic literature, the Islamization of Anatolia, hagiography as cultural and ideological challenge to the orthodox Islamic establishment, hagiography as historical source, hagiography as performance, and hagiography as vernacular narrative. In addition to primary sources (manuscripts), major scholarly contributions in Turkish, English, and French will be read and discussed throughout the semester.

To be able to succeed in this seminar, students must have completed at least two years of Ottoman Turkish (or obtain permission of the instructor).
