War, Diplomacy and Genocide - Hungary in World War II, 1938-1945
Catalog Number CEUS-U 320/520
Laszlo Borhi

Despite its small size Hungary was the scene of some of the most intense fighting in World War II since Hitler regarded it as an important line of defense against the Red Army. Moreover, in 1944 the Germans and their Hungarian accomplices managed to destroy the bigger part of the last intact Jewish population of 825 thousand people in Europe. Why did Hungary enter the war on Germany’s side? How was the war pursued? Why did its efforts to jump out of the war fail? What role did the Allies assign to Hungary in their war strategy? What were the roots of the Holocaust in Hungary and how was it accomplished? Beside seeking answers to these questions the course will discuss the history of the Hungarian war effort in the Soviet Union and the Soviet occupation of Hungary.
