Advanced Finnish II

The aim of this course is to obtain advanced skills that are desirable in academic life and work. The goal is to learn to communicate rather effectively and appropriately in many demanding oral and written tasks and situations, and to understand both writing and speech on demanding topics. You will also widen your knowledge on Finnish culture and history. 

The course is based on engaging in communicative skills. The methods of this course are learner centered, communicative and often problem-based, which means that sometimes, for instance, you will solve grammar rules with your peer and assistance of your instructor. All basic language skills, speaking, listening and writing will be included both in class activities and at home.

-         Instructor’s own material
-         Audio and video cassettes
-         Silfverberg Leena: Suomen kielen jatko-oppikirja. Finn Lectura, Helsinki.
-         Silfverberg Leena: Harjoituskirja suomen kielen jatko-opetusta varten. Finn Lectura, Helsinki.
-         Selected authentic material such as literature, newspapers and magazines, radio and TV-programs, songs.

 Exams:

      -         6 Quizzes
-         Midterm exam
-         Final exam

 Attendance:  Because of the nature of foreign language learning, regular attendance and home works are necessary to achieve a satisfactory level of proficiency. You will be given three excused absences. Absences beyond three instructional hours will result in grade penalty of 2% per day.

 Grading:

 The final grade is based on attendance and participation (30%)
homework (30%)
journal (10%)
quizzes (10%)
midterm (10%)
final (10%).
