Course objectives
The aim of the
course is to build students' confidence as language users and improve their
knowledge of Estonian grammar (review of morphology, issues of syntax), oral
skills (class discussion of newspaper articles, fiction and poetry, class
presentations), writing skills (journal entries, summaries of articles, films
and news clips, short essays) and listening comprehension (TV broadcasts, audio
tape recordings). The focus will be on structures characteristic of formal
written Estonian as well as specifics of different registers of oral production.

Assignments and evaluation
- Classroom participation and attendance
are required.

- Homework assignments, keeping a daily
journal, weekly self-select written and/or broadcast news for oral and
written reports, quizzes and tests, midterm exam, final exam are part of
the final grade.
Departmental Policies

The Department of Central Eurasian Studies no longer allows auditing of
language courses. Any inquiries must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.

Students enrolled in CEUS language courses obtain a grade at the
end of each semester. The Department does not offer pass/fail options.

Incompletes are not given in CEUS language courses. Any inquiries
must be addressed to CEUS Chair directly.
- If you are a native speaker of a language or you are a
citizen of the country or you graduated from a high school from
the country, Indiana University and departmental policy may (or may not)
prohibit you from enrollment in this language class. Please direct all
