C. Reference Sources
Sources of data on hazardous chemicals. Most of these sources
include references to reviews and primary research on the substances'
toxicity. In several cases (e. g. Sax's, The Handbook of
Pesticide Toxicology and RTECS) these references are made in
abbreviated form. The tables in these books' introductions
must be consulted to find the complete reference.

II. Pharmacy Library Print and CD-ROM Indexes.
The descriptions of items F, G and H were taken from the Purdue
University Libraries CD-ROM - Diskette Directory, produced by
the Computer Based Information Services Department. Copies of
this directory are available in the Pharmacy Library.
A. Chemical Abstracts
Located against the west wall and on index shelves 1A, 1B and 2A.
Weekly issues at the index bar.
Weekly issues of CA are indexed by author name and by keywords
taken directly from titles and abstracts. Even numbered issues index
articles on Toxicology and Radiation Biochemistry in the Biochemistry
Sections. Odd numbered issues index articles on Air Pollution and Industrial
Hygiene and Waste Treatment and Disposal in the Applied Chemistry and
Chemical Engineering Sections.
6-month and 5-year cumulative indexes are available for author
name, General Subjects and Chemical Substances.
The Index Guide (shelved with the indexes) should be consulted for
appropriate subject headings and compound names when searching the
latter two indexes. Books in Section C of this handout, such as Sax's,
RTECS and The Merck Index will give CA approved names for searches in
the Chemical Substances Index and CA Registry Numbers for online searches.
B. Index Medicus
Located against the west wall and on index shelf 2B. Monthly issues
at index bar.
The premier index for primary and clinical biomedical research.
There is some overlap with Chemical Abstracts in the coverage of
primary research.
Access to both the monthly issues and the yearly cumulations is by
author name and by classified Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
All of the Subject Headings used for indexing are listed in a separate
volume kept with the indexes. Consulting this list of subject headings
is an important first step in searching Index Medicus.
The electronic counterpart of Index Medicus, MEDLINE, is available
in the library on CD-ROM . The last 6 years are available on a terminal
behind the library's THOR terminals. This database can be searched
using keywords or MeSH terms, author names and CAS Registry Numbers
(for some compounds).
C. Industrial Hygiene Digest.
Located on abstract shelf 2B.
A monthly publication which abstracts approximately 60 periodicals.
Access is by keywords and by substance names.
III. Print and CD-ROM indexes available at other libraries on
campus
A. Applied Science and Technology Index.
Available in the Engineering Library, covering 1958 to the present.
The CD-ROM version of this index is also available in the Engineering
Library, covering 1983 to the present. Ask at the library about
availability and advance sign-up.
B. Biological Abstracts.
Available in the Life Sciences Library, covering 1926 to the
present. The CD-ROM version of this index is also available in
the Life Sciences Library, covering 1990 to the present.
Both the print and electronic versions of this index are indexed
by author name and by keywords which are either extracted
directly from an article's title or abstract or are added by
Biological Abstracts indexers.
C. Engineering Index.
Available in the Engineering Library. An electronic version is
available under the INDEXES option on THOR as COMPENDEX. The index
can be searched using substance names, and possibly the term
"industrial hygiene".
D. Environment Abstracts.
A monthly publication with author and subject indexes. Cumulated
annually as Environment Index. Substance names can be used as
search terms.
E. Environment Index.
The annual cumulation of the above. Indexed by author name,
subject, article source and geographic area of the author's
institution. Substance names can be used as search terms.
F. Hazardous Material Control and Management (HMC&M)/
Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS).
A CD-ROM database located in the Engineering Library. Provides
basic information to comply with the more stringent regulatory
controls established for hazardous materials. Contains information
from Material Safety Data Sheets.
G. OSHA CD-ROM
Located in the HSSE Library, updated quarterly. Includes the full
text of regulations, documents and technical information issued by OSHA.
The disk is available at the reference desk.
I. Science Citation Index.
Available in both the Chemistry and Life Science Libraries.
This index can be searched by author name, author's geographic
location and subject (using the Permuterm Subject Index, an
alphabetical listing of paired keywords from article titles).
The main use of this index is to find recent articles related
to a known earlier article by citations. Inside the front covers
of each SCI volume are instructions on how to conduct a citation
search. Articles found in sources like The Merck Index could serve
as starting points for a citation search.
H. Toxic Release Inventory - TRI.
Located in the Engineering Library. An appointment is required for
searching. This CD-ROM began as an electronic version of the EPA's
1987 Toxic Release Inventory and Hazardous Substance Fact Sheets.
The most current edition is from 1991.
