C472 OBJECTIVES
Updated: 6 January 2002
C472 will give you the skills to effectively utilize major computer-based
chemical information tools found in academic and industrial environments.
Whereas C471 introduces a wide variety of computer-based and print-based
reference tools and services, C472 concentrates exclusively on a few computer-based
products and services. C471 is a required course for C472. For a review of the C471 material,
see:
http://www.indiana.edu/~cheminfo/C471/471home.html
These are the tools that you will learn to use well in C472:
- SciFinder Scholar (a brief update of databases and features possible with the client
software, concentrating on recent enhancements)
- STN Express with Discover! (front-end software that is loaded on the local computer)
- STN on the Web http://stnweb.cas.org/ (a Web option
that has most of the features of STN Express with Discover!)
- Beilstein CrossFire (in-depth use of both Gmelin and Beilstein)
- Cambridge Structural Database (the world's largest database of crytallographic information)
By the end of the course, you will be fairly conversant with STN Messenger Command
language, and you will have a good grasp of the search options available in all of
the databases covered in the course.
