In Chemical Abstracts (CA);

The chemical literature is divided into 80 sections.
Each section covers one broad subject area.
Each abstract in Chemical Abstracts appears in only one section.
If there is information in the abstract that touches on another section, the abstract is cross-referenced to that section.

CA section placements can be used to help researchers quickly find abstracts of interest in Print CA. Using the appropriate section code(s) (/SC) as online search terms is one of many ways to focus or expand an online answer set.
