Transferring Content from SoftChalk to Canvas

Wednesday, August 6, 1-2:30 p.m., CITL Workshop Room, Wells Library E243

Have you created content in SoftChalk using a license from the CITL or UITS? Our license with SoftChalk will expire in mid-August and you will no longer be able to use SoftChalk or edit your content without paying for a subscription. In this workshop, CITL consultant Sue Hathaway will show you how to download your content from SoftChalk and transfer it to Canvas. The session will include some time for you to begin transferring your content, so bring your laptop!

Canvas Next Steps: Content Integration and Organization

Join CITL consultant Kate Ellis to learn about how Canvas' integrated tool set can help instructors organize course content in ways that highlight the connections between assigned readings, assessments, and activities. Some tools promote a structured progression through course materials while others encourage more informal groupings. This workshop will feature several hands-on components; please notify the CITL if you are unable to bring your own laptop (we have 1-2 laptops participants can borrow).

These workshops, in just three hours, are designed to help you quickly move your content from Oncourse to Canvas and learn the basics of Canvas in time for the start of the fall semester.
You can choose to attend any of the four scheduled workshops, as listed below (the same material will be presented at each workshop). There is no charge to attend a workshop.
Note these workshops are very much “hands-on”, so bring your laptop and your course syllabus, announcements and files you’d like to place in your Canvas course site (or be able to access these materials via your laptop through the wireless network). Each hour of the workshop will focus on a specific Canvas task, with the majority of the hour (50 minutes) allocated to giving you time to complete the task in your own course. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a working Canvas course ready for the fall ’14 semester. More specific details will be provided in a follow-up e-mail, once you register for one of the workshops.
While Oncourse will remain available through the summer 2016 semester, we encourage you to start teaching with Canvas now, as it includes significant new features and functionality not found in Oncourse.

For Graduate Students: Associate Instructor Workshop on Classroom Climate

Tuesday, August 19, 4-6 p.m., Frangipani Room, Indiana Memorial Union

Most first-time associate instructors (AIs) have not taught at a large research university before, and are often challenged by the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of students at Indiana University Bloomington. By a 1990 resolution, the Bloomington Faculty Council has mandated programs for all new associate instructors concerning the “standards of conduct” set out in the Academic Handbook — including those behaviors related to cultural diversity and racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination. Since 1991, the Classroom Climate workshop has helped equip first-time AIs from all schools and departments with strategies for maintaining a welcoming and rewarding classroom atmosphere for all students. For many departments, the campus-wide session has become an important part of the acculturation of new instructors. Even for the departments who have developed their own programs, the Classroom Climate workshop is a rare opportunity for graduate instructors to interact with their peers from across disciplines, and participants report that it is a positive professional development experience. Both events are the same, so AIs should only attend one of the two offerings. For participants using public transportation, Campus Bus will operate the E Route only with service 7:30 AM to 6 PM on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Bloomington Transit will operate on the class break schedule. Registration is not required.

For Graduate Students: Authentic Learning from the First Day and Beyond

The type of learning that students experience both in and out of the classroom affects their success at achieving course goals in numerous ways. In this workshop for associate instructors, George Rehrey (CITL) along with graduate student panelists will discuss the factors that influence student motivation and share ways to create authentic learning experiences that increase student engagement starting with the very first day of class and continuing throughout the semester. In this workshop for associate instructors, Katie Kearns (CITL) along with graduate student panelists will share strategies to promote engaged, equitable participation in classrooms where learning goals include enhancing students’ analysis and problem-solving skills. Participants will experience several techniques and discuss how they might adapt them to their own classroom contexts. This workshop is appropriate for graduate students in natural, mathematical, and social science fields such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, informatics, mathematics, physics, psychology, sociology, and speech and hearing. New Associate Instructors, have your teaching questions answered and receive instructional advice from current graduate students in this informal lunch. Engage in candid dialogue, questions and answers, and community-building in small discussion groups, each facilitated by an experienced associate instructor. Box lunches are available for 150 graduate student registrants. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the University Graduate School, and the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs. In this workshop for associate instructors, Cordah Robinson and Madeleine Gonin (CITL) will introduce teaching and learning technologies used at IUB. Get acquainted with IU’s course management systems: Canvas, newly adopted this summer, and Oncourse, IU’s current course management system (retiring in two years). These and other IUB-supported technologies tools hold students accountable for their learning, sustain student learning communities through online groups and forums, support collaboration, originality (checking for citation and plagiarism), foreign language instruction, assessment, peer review in writing assignments, and help you manage course assignments and grades. For Graduate Students: Three Strategies for Classroom Success

Key frameworks for being a successful teacher include classroom authority, classroom management, and lesson design. In this workshop for associate instructors, participants will consider problematic scenarios and discuss approaches to avoid problems. We will also practice ways to develop student conceptual understanding of disciplinary mental processes. By the end of the session with Joan Middendorf (CITL) and Kate Altizer (Musicology), participants will be able to cultivate teacher voice, student motives, and beautiful lessons in order to greet students with confidence. Registration is not required.


For Graduate Students: Grading Student Work More Efficiently

Associate Instructors’ lives are directly affected by the number of pages of student writing they must read in a given semester. A few reliable grading strategies (with pen or cursor) can save you hours without compromising your standards or your interaction with students. In this workshop for associate instructors, Laura Plummer (CITL Writing Program) and participants will practice these strategies together (warning: you will have to look at a few short essays). Registration is not required.

Make the Most of Your Time: File Management in Canvas

Join CITL consultant Kyle Leach to learn more about the Files tool in Canvas. Kyle will discuss the good practices for file storage in Canvas and the connection between Canvas and Box. Designing Research-Based Writing Assignments: A Discussion and Working Session

Tuesday, September 9, 9:30-11 a.m., Wells Library E243

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore how key principles of assignment design can inform teaching that emphasizes research as a process of authentic inquiry and meaning-making. Assignment-related issues we will consider include: scale & feasibility, sequencing and timing small assignments that lead to a larger final product (scaffolding), disciplinary challenges, selection of information sources and search strategies, and assessment. Participants will have the opportunity in small groups to discuss and share feedback on their own research assignments. Librarians, Campus Writing Program staff, and experienced faculty will be on hand to provide resources and timely feedback as instructors revise their assignments. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning and the IU Libraries and is part of the Libraries’ Scholars Commons workshop series.

How HIP is your teaching? High Impact Practices Roundtable

Friday, September 19, 9:30-11:30 a.m., Frangipani Room, Indiana Memorial Union

How have faculty at IU Bloomington used high impact practices to deepen and challenge their students' understanding both within and outside of the classroom? In lightning round presentations followed by roundtable discussions, instructors will share why and how they have incorporated diversity, collaborative assignments, service-learning, and intensive writing into their students' learning experiences. Panelists include Katherine Engebretson (Education), Hilary Kahn (International Studies), Andrew Libby (Human Biology), Nancy Magill (Biotechnology), Kate Reck (Chemistry), and Kyle Rinne (SPEA). Designing Research-Based Writing Assignments: A Discussion and Working Session

Friday, September 26, 1-2:30 p.m., Wells Library E243

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore how key principles of assignment design can inform teaching that emphasizes research as a process of authentic inquiry and meaning-making. Assignment-related issues we will consider include: scale & feasibility, sequencing and timing small assignments that lead to a larger final product (scaffolding), disciplinary challenges, selection of information sources and search strategies, and assessment. Participants will have the opportunity in small groups to discuss and share feedback on their own research assignments. Librarians, Campus Writing Program staff, and experienced faculty will be on hand to provide resources and timely feedback as instructors revise their assignments. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning and the IU Libraries and is part of the Libraries’ Scholars Commons workshop series.
