About CLACS
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) was founded in 1963 (originally as the Latin American Studies Program) as an umbrella organization uniting Latin Americanists from all campuses of Indiana University. Currently, there are approximately 90 affiliated faculty in 16 departments and seven professional schools who teach and/or conduct research on topics relating to Latin America. These include, among others, members of the departments of Spanish and Portuguese, Economics, Fine Arts, Geography, Biology, History, Anthropology and Archeology, Folklore, Political Science, Linguistics, Telecommunications, and Criminal Justice, as well as faculty from the Schools of Public and Environmental Affairs, Business, Education, Journalism, Music, Social Work, and Library and Information Science.
Many faculty affiliated with CLACS are nationally prominent scholars, a fact reflected by the number of prestigious grants and awards received by them, including seven Guggenheim Fellowships and numerous others from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the Social Research Council, and Fulbright-Hays.
CLACS offers an undergraduate minor and area certificate, a Master's degree, three-year Dual Master's Degree programs (Business Administration, Library Science, and Public Affairs) and a doctoral minor and certificate. Students also benefit from the university's extensive library collections and nationally prominent research institutes.
