CLACS-UCA Exchange, Nicaragua

We are proud to announce that we have developed a new project with the Instituto de Historia de Nicaragua y Centroamérica (IHNCA) of the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), Managua, Nicaragua.

The IHNCA is a historical and documentary research center founded through the fusion of the Biblioteca del Instituto Histórico Centroamericano (IHCA), created in 1934, and the Instituto de Historia de Nicaragua (IHN), created in 1987. It is located on the UCA campus in a new and modern building built in 1997 specifically for the development of academic activities and documentary preservation.

Among IHNCA's objectives are: to promote and develop research on Nicaraguan and Central American history, to promote the professional development of Nicaraguan historians, to rescue and preserve Nicaragua's documentary patrimony, and to promote the use of new technologies in the preservation of documentary sources.

The IHNCA also organizes courses on professional development in the areas of social science, Nicaraguan art, and library and information science. It sponsors joint-activities between Nicaraguan historians and foreign historians, and organizes workshops and conferences.

The IHNCA publishes several journals, like the Revista de Historia, Talleres de Historia, Boletines Bibliográficos, and Catálogos Documentales. It has also participated in the making of historical documentaries and pioneered in Nicaragua the use of digital techniques and databases in the preservation of primary sources.

One of IHNCA's greatest strengths is the documentary collection, which is considered the biggest and most complete in Nicaragua, and one of the best in Central America. The library has about 50,000 volumes. Besides this, the IHNCA has several collections, like the Colección Compañía de Jesús (Catholic Church in Central America), the Colección José Coronel Urtecho (books and personal archive of poet José Urtecho), and the Colección Mario Flores Ortiz (Ortiz was a prestigious Nicaraguan psychiatrist and founder of the Partido Socialista Nicaraguense). It also has collections of newspapers, journals, and official documents. Of particular note, the Historical Archive has the following collections: Colección Siglo XIX, Archivos Presidenciales, Archivos Particulares, Colección Somoza, Fondo Alejandro Bolaños Geyer, Colección Intervención Norteamericana, Movimiento Estudiantial, and Partidos Políticos.

The IHNCA has a collection of over 16,000 photographs, 1,200 maps of Nicaragua, Central America, and Mexico, and holds recordings of the testimonies of more than 7,000 political and social activists who took part in the fight against the Somoza dictatorship.
