Background
My interest in the ancient world covers a broad range of topics, from Greek poetry and art to the history of sexuality. Most recently my research has focused on Athenian political and cultural history, especially concerning democracy and class conflict. My current book project reflects my larger interest in Greek lyric poetry, specifically the skolion, or "drinking song," which had a much larger impact on Archaic and Classical Greek song (and political) culture than has previously been acknowledged. In Singing the Skolion: a Study of Poetics and Politics in Ancient Greece I explore issues of genre, performance, and occasion as they relate to the origin and development of a lyric form and how that form functioned within various social contexts and creative media. With this project I hope to provide the first complete analysis of the skolion as a distinct genre, collecting and analyzing all of its various manifestations in extant Greek literature.
