Film and Media Studies

About the Program

Indiana University has a long and distinguished history in film studies, pioneering the development of film courses for the humanities in the 1960s and creating one of the first film studies programs.  Today, the program is fully integrated into the Department of Communication and Culture.

Providing a solid foundation in the history, theory, and criticism of film, television, and new media, the film and media curriculum examines the aesthetics of media forms and their authors; the industrial practices, narrative strategies, genres, and historical contexts that organize cultural production and reception within and across media; and the links among media, identity, ideology, and power that influence public cultures around the globe.  Additionally, advanced students have the opportunity to gain invaluable production experience in both film and video.
