The Intensive Writing Essay Prizes have been established to recognize the work and excellence of students writing for IU Bloomington courses that fulfill the College's Intensive Writing requirement.

The prizes also recognize the teaching efforts made by faculty to encourage and develop good student writing. Those faculty whose students receive Intensive Writing Essay Prizes will be recognized alongside their students.

Six Intensive Writing Essay Prizes will be awarded for every academic year, two in each of the following distribution areas, which group together student essays most like one another in genre and subject matter:

• Arts and Humanities
• Social and Historical Studies
• Natural and Mathematical Sciences

In each category, two prizes of $150 will be awarded: one prize for essays under ten pages long, and one prize for essays over ten pages in length.

Nominating a student

We encourage all faculty to nominate those students they feel deserve recognition for their writing, and we especially urge those faculty teaching in departments that do not regularly award essay prizes to take advantage of this opportunity.

Student essays nominated by a faculty member will be collected each semester.

Deadlines for submissions

The prize is awarded for the academic year, and nominations and submissions will be solicited in the fall and spring semesters.

The deadline for essays to be considered for the Intensive Writing Essay Prizes for the 2007-2008 academic year is March 3, 2008.

Selection and notification process

A panel of judges drawn from current and former IUB intensive writing faculty, reading anonymous submissions, will select winners in each category.

Presentation of Intensive Writing Essay Prizes will be held in April, 2008.
