Dear College of Arts and Sciences Faculty and Students:
The faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences and Indiana University care deeply about academic integrity. The information and links provided on this website provide valuable tools for clarifying expectations regarding academic honesty and integrity and for explaining how to avoid plagiarism charges.
The College expects that undergraduate students who satisfy their writing requirement with specific courses at IUB, as well as those who place out of the composition requirement or who transfer into IUB with composition credit from another institution, will be familiar with common definitions of plagiarism and the norms of academic citation. It is in the best interest of the College, its faculty, and its students to include in each syllabus a clear statement on academic integrity, with special reference to plagiarism.
The College further expects all students–undergraduate and graduate–to act with integrity in the work they produce. In like manner, we ask that our instructors provide students with clearly articulated information on expectations and the consequences for citing inappropriately or otherwise exhibiting academic misconduct. The University has a clear set of expectations in the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct; students should know that in all classes taught in the College, the obligation to act with integrity is fundamental to a university education, and the consequences for misconduct will be applied fairly and consistently.
And to the students who take courses in the many departments of the College of Arts and Sciences: I wish you well in your studies as you prepare for a future built upon a firm foundation of integrity and honesty.
Sincerely,
Bennett I. Bertenthal
Dean and Rudy Professor of
