Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

Description:

This is a national scholarship program that supports undergraduate students who plan careers in natural sciences, math, and engineering. The Goldwater Foundation does NOT accept direct student applications for this award; students must be nominated to the College by a faculty member. The College holds an internal competition to select nominees for the national Goldwater competition and The Foundation selects approximately 300 winners each year from all over the United States.

Eligibility:

  • Current sophomore or junior
  • Planning a career in natural sciences (Astronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Physics) or Mathematics. Note: It is not clear if The Foundation considers majors in Cognitive Science or Neuroscience eligible for this award. Please speak with the faculty members who would write your letters of recommendation to clarify.
  • Successful nominees have had College GPAs of 3.900 or higher
  • Must be a US citizen, resident alien, or US national

Application Process:

The Goldwater Foundation accepts applications only through participating universities via designated nominating officials. Students MUST register with Ms. Lynn Keller to pick up application materials. Please call 856.0827 to arrange a time to speak with Ms. Keller. The College's Selection Committee will review all applications and will forward successful nominations to the Goldwater Foundation who will select the scholarship recipients.

See application packet (to be picked up from Ms. Lynn Keller, Kirkwood Hall 104). These materials include important instructions for paper and electronic application procedures.

Award:

Up to $7,500 per year toward the costs of attending college, including tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Current juniors are eligible for one year of support; current sophomores are eligible for two years of support.

IU Internal Deadline:

All materials (some electronic, some on paper) must be received by the College of Arts and Sciences by Friday, December 4, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.
