Beckman Scholars Award

Description:

The Beckman Scholars Program provides scholarships to advance the education, research training, and personal development of promising young scientists in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and the biological and medical sciences. The in-depth undergraduate research experiences and comprehensive faculty mentoring offered through this award are unique in terms of their scope, content, and level of scholarship. The Beckman Foundation does NOT accept direct student applications for this award; students must be nominated to the College by a Beckman Faculty Fellow. The College holds an internal competition to select Beckman Scholars.

Eligibility:

  • Must currently be involved in a research project in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, the biological and medical sciences, or some combination of these areas
  • Must commit to working on a research project for two summers and full academic year
  • High academic merit, including a minimum College GPA of 3.900
  • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States at the time of application

Application Process:

Candidates must currently be working in labs on research projects and must be nominated by faculty mentors who have been pre-approved by the Beckman Foundation. Students can be nominated for the Beckman Scholars by participating faculty members. Students MUST register with Dean Terri Greenslade to pick up application materials in Kirkwood Hall 012. Call 812.855.8245 to arrange a time.

  • Application form
  • Abstract (no more than 200 words) - describing the proposed research project
  • Statement of career goals and how the award would serve those goals
  • Research proposal (3-5 pages)
  • Mentor form
  • Acceptance of terms statement

Award:

The Beckman award provides recipients with financial support to perform scientific research under the direction of an IUB faculty mentor for two summers and one academic year. Over the award period, scholars receive a stipend of $16,000 as well as $3,300 to cover the cost of research supplies/travel. In addition, recipients must attend the annual Beckman Scholars Symposium during the second summer of their awards.
