Carnegie Junior Fellows Program

Description:

The Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace provides invaluable work experience for students with a career interest in the area of national affairs. Junior Fellows selected by the Endowment work in Washington, DC for one year and provide research assistance to Senior Associates on projects related to non-proliferation, democracy building, US leadership in the world, trade, energy and climate, as well as various world regions including: China, Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Eurasia. The Carnegie Endowment does NOT accept direct student applications for this award. The College holds an internal competition to select nominees and then forwards two nominations to the national competition.

Eligibility:

  • Graduating college seniors or students who have graduated within the past academic year but who have not begun graduate studies
  • Demonstrated interest in and completion of a significant amount of coursework in international affairs, political science, economics, history, or Russian or Chinese studies
  • Eligible and able to work in the United States for a full 12 months from August 1 through July 31. Note: Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US for the full year may apply.
  • High academic merit, including a minimum College GPA of 3.750

Application Process:

The Carnegie Endowment accepts applications only through participating universities via designated nominating officials. Each participating university may nominate only two students each year. Students MUST register with Dean Terri Greenslade to pick up application materials in Kirkwood Hall 012. Call 812.855.8245 to arrange a time. The College's Selection Committee will review all applications and will forward successful nominations to the Carnegie Endowment. The Selection Committee at the Carnegie Endowment chooses approximately 25 finalists who are interviewed in February and early March.

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Undergraduate transcript (may be unofficial)              

Award:

Junior fellows currently receive a gross salary of $2,916.66 per month ($35,000 per year) and a full benefits package from the Carnegie Endowment. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony, and organize briefings attended by scholars, journalists, and government officials.
