Intensive Writing Essay Prize

Description:

These awards have been established to recognize the work and excellence of students’ writing for IU Bloomington courses that fulfill the College's Intensive Writing requirement. They also recognize the teaching efforts made by faculty to encourage and develop good student writing. Faculty members whose students receive Intensive Writing Essay Prizes will be recognized along with their students. Six Intensive Writing Essay Prizes are awarded each academic year, two in each of the following distribution areas: Arts and Humanities, Social and Historical Studies, Natural and Mathematical Sciences.

Eligibility:

  • Must be currently enrolled at IUB at the time of nomination
  • Must be nominated by the faculty member who assigned the submitted essay
  • Must be willing to sign a pledge attesting to the paper's authenticity upon submission
  • Students may be nominated only once per course, however, student may be nominated for more than one prize if nominations are from different courses
  • Essays must be written for a College Intensive Writing course during the 2009-2010 academic year
  • Essay must be the student's individual work; no group reports will be accepted
  • Essay must be submitted to faculty member/instructor for a grade within the semester it was assigned
  • Essays must be at least 6 pages in length (or combination of shorter work totaling at least 6 pages)
  • Essays must be word-processed and submitted in hard copy
  • Essays must be clean and unmarked (no readers' comments or grade)
  • Essay must be submitted with student name and university ID number on cover page
  • Each submission must include an Application Coversheet

Application Process:

Student essays nominated by faculty members are collected each semester. Complete application according to the guidelines and submit to Laura Plummer, Director, Campus Writing Program, Franklin Hall 008 by the deadline.

  • Application Cover Sheet

Award:

Two prizes of $150 will be awarded in each category (Arts and Humanities, Social and Historical Studies, Natural and Mathematical Sciences). One prize will be for essays under ten pages long and one prize will be for essays over ten pages in length.

Friday, March 5, 2010, by 4:00 p.m.
