Palmer-Brandon Prize in the Humanities

Description:

This award is intended to support the continued academic, scholarly, and creative pursuits of at least one current third-year junior. Those selected to receive this prestigious prize are expected to be in the top one percent of undergraduates in their fields in terms of academic achievement and potential.

Eligibility:

  • Students majoring in: Classical Studies, Comparative Literature, East Asian Languagesand Cultures, English, Fine Arts (Art History or Studio Art), Folklore and Ethnomusicology, French and Italian, Germanic Studies, India Studies, Near EasternLanguages and Cultures, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese, or Theatre and Drama. Additionally, students majoring in African-American and African Diaspora Studies, Anthropology, American Studies, Communication and Culture, Gender Studies, Individualized Major Program, International Studies, and Jewish Studies can be considered eligible if the Humanities form the focus of the student’s coursework, research, career plans, and application materials.
  • Current third-year student with junior standing, planning to graduate in May or Aug 2011
  • Must be enrolled full-time at IUB both semesters of 2010-2011
  • High academic merit, including a minimum College GPA of 3.750

Application Process:

Students may not apply independently. The selection committee will only accept nominations from College of Arts and Sciences faculty members or departments. Applications can be obtained from the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the student’s home department. Nominees must complete an extensive application form and return it with all other required material to the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office, Kirkwood Hall 012 (Hours: 8:00a.m.-12:00 p.m.; 1:00-4:00 p.m., weekdays). The selection committee will interview finalists.

  • Nomination letter from an IU College of Arts and Sciences faculty member
  • Two additional letters of recommendation, see application form for details
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae
    Recent photograph for use in publicity materials
  • A 3-to-5 page personal statement (See application for details.)
  • An academic paper, written in English (See application for details.)
  • One additional sample of your work (See application for details.)

Award:

At least one third-year junior will be selected to receive the Palmer-Brandon Prize. Although the amount can vary, this award is substantial and represents the largest award that the College of Arts and Sciences grants to students in the Humanities in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. Note: This award is taxable and will be reported to the IRS.
