
Bill Johnston’s translations from the Polish include Witold Gombrowicz’s Bacacay (Archipelago Books, 2004), Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński’s White Magic and Other Poems (Green Integer, 2005), and Tadeusz Różewicz’s New Poems (Archipelago Books, in press), along with over a dozen other books of poetry and prose. He has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (for Juliusz Słowacki’s Balladina) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (for Stefan Żeromski’s The Coming Spring). He won the 2005 Translation Award of AATSEEL (the Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages) for his translation of Magdalena Tulli’s prose poem Dreams and Stones (Archipelago Books, 2004). From 2003 – 2006 he was a board member of the American Literary Translators Association.
Johnston holds degrees from Oxford University, Durham University, and the University of Hawai’i. He has a joint appointment with the Department of Second Language Studies, and is also director of Indiana University’s Polish Studies Center.
