The Center for Comparative Arts Studies is a division within the Department of Comparative Literature. Indiana University has offered courses in the comparative arts for over 50 years. In pioneering interarts studies, this department revolutionized the field of Comparative Literature by viewing its work as fundamentally interdisciplinary, which opposed the old-fashioned view of Comparative Literature as an offshoot of European Languages. Over the last several decades, the Center for Comparative Arts has done numerous hirings and has created and expanded courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This department is one of the few places in the country offering an undergraduate minor in Comparative Arts. The goal of this minor is to achieve an integrated humanistic outlook in the study of the arts. College students can also major in Comparative Literature with a focus on Comparative Arts. Likewise, graduate students can also specialize in comparative arts at the M.A. and Ph.D. level. Graduate students also have an opportunity to teach courses for the Center, including C255—Modern Literature and the Other Arts, the country’s oldest interarts course, which has been offered continuously for the last 50 years. Along with taking graduate courses in comparative arts, students have the unique opportunity of earning a Double Ph.D. with Art History or other fields.
