Department

Use this option to include the Department column in your search results, or to limit your search to a single Department, School, or College.

This option can be filtered.

Course Number

Use this option to include the Course Number column in your search results.

The Course Number includes a letter, e.g. B334, so sorting according to Course Number will sort all courses starting with "A" before all courses starting with "B", etc.

Course Name

Use this option to include the Course Name column in your search results.

This is the title of the course as listed in the Course Catalog. The name does not include any topic information; that can be displayed separately by selecting the Topic column.

Course Topic

Use this option to include the Topic column in your search results.

Most courses do not have topics, but it may be useful to sort according to topic if you are only interested in courses that have variable topic sections.

Instructor

Use this option to include the Instructor column in your search results.

The instructor is not listed for every course; this information is only shown if it was available at the time the course was loaded into our database. The instructor column will contain 'staff' in many of these cases.

Semester

Use this option to include the Semester column in your search results, or to limit your search to a specific semester of the year (Fall, Spring, Summer I, or Summer II). Since this option does not specify calendar year; you may want to use the Year option to do that.

This option can be filtered.

Year

Use this option to include the Year column in your search results, or to limit your search to a specific calendar year. Since this option does not specify academic semester, you may want to use the Semester option to do that.

This option can be filtered.

Contact Hours

Use this option to include the Contact Hours column in your search results, or to limit your search to courses that are worth at least the number of contact hours you specify.

This option can be filtered.

Africa Content

The 'Africa Content' is the percentage of the course which addresses Africa in particular, as opposed to other regions/issues, etc.

Use this option to include the Africa Content column in your search results, or to limit your search to courses that are worth at least the percentage of Africa content you specify.

This option can be filtered.

Course Description

Use this option to include links to the course descriptions at the IU Dean of Faculty website, in your search results. (Click on 'Course Listings' in the left-hand navigation column to see the all the course descriptions there.) Not every course has a description page; for such courses a '[link]' will still be shown, but it will not be functional.

Sorting the results

You may sort the results of a search by clicking on any of the column headings. Clicking once will sort the results, in ascending order, by the contents of that column. You can click again to reverse the direction of the sort to descending.

Options with filters

Filters may be used in different ways to modify how the option works.

• There are two kinds of filters, those with a selectable list of values and those with an input area to type in a number.
• If you mark the checkbox next to the option, a column for that option will always appear in the search results, regardless of whether you use the filter.
• If you choose 'any' from the filter select list next to the option in the form, or leave the filter input blank, courses will be displayed regardless of the value of this option for the course. If you choose a value or type a number for the filter, only courses matching (or exceeding) this value for that option will be displayed.
  For example, if you only want to see courses that meet for 3 contact hours or more, you would type '3' in the input box next to the Credit Hours option.
• If you use the filter to specify an option (or minimum value for it), but you leave the option's check box blank, your search will be still limited to courses matching or exceeding that option value, but the associated column will not display.
  PLEASE NOTE that if you specify a value for a filter without displaying the corresponding option, you will not be able to sort your results according to that option.
