Education and training are the best tools for the prevention and elimination of discrimination. The Office of Affirmative Action
offers education, training, and consulting services to university departments, both academic and non-academic. Services are tailored
to meet the department's specific needs.
Training topics include:
- Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity
- Race Discrimination
- Sexual Harassment and other forms of sex discrimination
- the Americans with Disabilities Act
- Diversity
- and Faculty and Staff Recruitment and selection
Also offered in collaboration with Human Resources, the Legal Complianec Series for Supervisors.
Films and Videos
- "Night and Fog," 32 minutes, Tape, Audio Visual, CC1338,16. This film depicts the horrors of Nazi Germany concentration camps through
graphic images.
- "Names Can Really Hurt Us," 25 minutes, Tape, Residence Life. A series of interviews with junior-high and high-school students on the
effects of prejudice and name-calling. This tape has some good moments, though it is probably better used with a younger audience.
- "Voices," 37 minutes, Tape, Residence Life. A series of interviews with students and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds taking
about their experiences on campus. Included are segments about self-image, images of others and relationships.
- "Safe Speech, Free Speech and the University," 60 minutes, Tape, Residence Life. A 1991 PBS round table discussion about
free speech, diversity awareness and political correctness on the college campus. Included in this case study approach are students,
faculty, administrators and journalists.
- "Facing Differences: Living Together on Campus," 18 minutes, Tape, Residence Life. Produced by the Anti-Defamation League, this tape
offers comments from a diverse group of students about their lives on campus. The tape also includes some staged vignettes. Issues include
racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, stereotypes, affirmative action and controversial speakers on campus.
- "Student Orientation Video- The University of Michigan," 11 minutes, Residence Life. Interviews with a variety of "minority" students
at the University of Michigan discussing their experiences on campus. A good tape to
prompt discussion.
