Audition Instructions

If you have been granted an audition with the IU Contemporary Dance Program congratulations! You can only audition for the program if you have completed the application. (Visit Application for all instructions.) Be sure to follow the instructions below to assist in your performing an excellent audition.

1. If you have been granted an audition you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application. A letter will be sent via postal mail confirming your audition date.  Applicants that have submitted a paper copy will also receive confirmation of their audition date via postal mail. All auditionees should bring their confirmation letter to the audition.
2. ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS FOR THE DANCE MAJOR MUST BE RECEIVED AT LEAST TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE AUDITION DATE. YOU WILL RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION LETTER VIA POSTAL MAILPRIOR TO THE AUDITION. THIS LETTER MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE TIME OF THE AUDITION.
3. You must report to room 161 PH  9:30 am on the date of the audition. A campus map will accompany your confirmation letter. Auditionees will have the opportunity to observe a modern dance technique class from 10:00am-11:30am. The audition will begin promptly at 11:30am with a two hour technique class. The class will consist of a ballet barre and several modern dance combinations, as well as improvisation. Box lunches will be served from 1:30pm – 2:15pm. Students should then be prepared to show a 1.5 minute solo in the modern dance genre. Solos may be choreographed by the performers, or by a dance professional. Following the audition, dancers may elect to view repertory rehearsals from 3:30pm-6:30pm, at which time faculty will also be available to answer questions. Dance majors will also be available to answer questions and provide informal tours.  Letters indicating audition results will be sent approximately two weeks following the audition.

PLEASE NOTE:

ALL STUDENTS MUST OFFICIALLY APPLY AND BE ACCEPTED TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON PRIOR TO BEING ADMITTED TO THE KINESIOLOGY DANCE MAJOR. STUDENTS MAY AUDITION FOR THE MAJOR PRIOR TO OFFICIAL ADMISSION TO IU.

ADDITIONALLY, IN ADHERENCE TO UNIVERSITY POLICY, STUDENTS WHO PASS THE AUDITION PROCESS AND ARE ADMITTED TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON MUST COMPLETE 26 CREDIT HOURS WITH A GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 2.0 OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO BE OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED INTO THE DANCE MAJOR.
