The goals of the class are to:
  • develop a better understanding of ourselves as racial beings in a social context;
  • honestly listen and begin to validate the racial experiences of others;
  • build a stronger commitment to a community that appreciates and takes full advantage of living in a diverse community;
  • identify the individual, cultural, and institutional racism that exists in our communities and develop strategies for changing personal and institutional behaviors that perpetuate racism in all of its forms;
  • create strong interracial dialogue habits.
The class contents focuses on in-class discussion. This is fueled by readings, videos, and numerous in-class and out-of-class activities.
Course grades are based on participation, reflections and in-class writing assignments based on readings, an in-depth interview and activity with a class partner; a TV audit, and a case study. Extra credit is also available by watching movies and attending campus activities. Take a look at a tentative syllabus.

This course is typically offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. During the summer it is available to GROUPS students only. To enroll in the eight week course consult with your academic advisor and/or INSITE http://www.insite.iu.edu.

If you are interested in the five week sessions which do not bare academic credit return to the main page and select the discussion series.
