Associate Justice Erin Chapman


Erin Chapman, class of 2011, is currently majoring in History and Spanish Language and Literature. She is also working toward minors in Economics and English Literature. She has a strong interest in modern American History and the role of the United States in the world.

A Wells Scholar, a Robert C. Byrd Scholar and student in the Hutton Honors College, Erin serves as Vice-Chair of the Collins Living Learning Center Arts Council and as an assistant director for the Union Board Performing Arts Committee, through which she organized a series of poetry slams. In 2008 she helped to organize and co-direct a performance of “An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein” at Collins LLC. She also writes for both the Indiana Daily Student and the Wells Scholar alumni newsletter. Erin has interned at IU’s Lilly Rare Books and Manuscripts Library and at Cincinnati’s New Stage Collective, as an administrative assistant and stage manager.

Originally from North Bend, Ohio, Erin graduated with honors as the valedictorian from Taylor High School. She was president of the student body, secretary of the National Honor Society, a National AP Scholar and a National Merit Commended Scholar. In addition she was a student choreographer for her school’s drama club, and a four-year member of Cincinnati Young People’s Theater and the lead critic of her school’s Cappies critic team through which she attended and reviewed 57 local theatrical productions. She spent summers volunteering at a theater and diversity summer camp, and painting murals for Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital. She was also recognized by the regional Scholastic Art awards with gold keys for drawing and product design.

In her free time, Erin loves to paint, attend plays and hang out with friends. In her time at IU she plans to study abroad in both Europe and South America and to learn how to ride a road bike. After graduating she intends to pursue a career studying history or law.
